Bondo Gray Filler Primer Discontinued
My favorite primer, made by 3M, has apparently been discontinued. "Bondo Gray Filler Primer", part number 00720. I've been using this for at least 10 years, and kept a reasonable stockpile of the stuff, and would pickup a few cans at the local Ace Hardware when I got low. My stockpile had grown quite a bit, so haven't bought any for over a year, and was disappointed to see Ace no longer carried the stuff. Searching around, it seems to be completely gone, not even on the 3M site.
This was super-fast drying, and sanded with ease, never clogging sandpaper up to 400 grit. While Dupli-Color FP101 is good, this was better. I could spray multiple coats in one session, waiting mere seconds between coats, sand the stuff down shortly after, and move onto a base coat shortly after. Definitely needed a respirator with this stuff, just look at these ingredients! - Methyl Acetate - Propane - Butane - Isobutyl Acetate - Talc - Acrylic Polymer - Toluene - 4-Chlorobenzotrifluoride - Titanium Dioxide - Limestone - Polyethylene - Dibutyl Phthalate This is my last can.

Bummer.
Yes, finding good primers can be as much of a challenge at times as finding good paint. I never tried the 3M one you mention, but it sounds like it was a good one. The Duplicolor stuff is ok, and I like its fast drying times, but to me it has been bad to clog sandpaper and so I have tended to avoid it. Let us know if you find a good replacement for the 3M. I?d be interested in trying it. Earl

I use Rustoleum Filler-Primer. It dries fast and sands easily. A few years ago I was getting it for about $3 per can from Walmart.com. No shipping charges, it was delivered to Customer Service Dept at my local store. And often they pulled it from stock in their Automotive Dept. The last time I got any, I ordered 6 cans from Amazon. It was more expensive, but I do not recall what I paid. It is over $7 a can now for gray, black is cheaper. (I suppose black primer would be fine for rockets you plan to paint black!)

I've been using Tamiya #87064 Fine Surface Primer on a Semroc Moon Glo.
Lovely stuff! Three light coats ~ 60 seconds apart. Next day sand with 400 then 800 wet or dry sandpaper. It's now in Rustoleum white, color coat will be Rusto flourescent yellow. Next will be a "modified" Semroc (Estes) Skyhook; forgot to mark the aft end for fin placement. FWIW, a friend of mine's side biz is cutting self adhesive vinyl for various uses. He's sending ASTRON RANGER in both B & W for a homage to Stine's Ranger and others. If I'm lucky, he'll be able to do the Astron Drifter "checkerboard" name decal; that will be cool. Bob p.s. the orange and white Ranger was built '14 and flown during NARAM 57 in Tucson. Used the last 3 B8-5 engines; it was a great up-down flight!

The Astron Ranger is one of my all-time favorite kits along with the Astron Cobra and Astron Scrambler.
They should have kept it around instead of the similar looking but BORING Big Bertha.
