Black Vulcan
I guess I can say I've started the build:
I said before that the Estes Sizzler has a 9" BT-20; actually, it's a bit short, but the Estes Hi-Flier does. The only thing I'm short of is the nose cone... nobody makes a PNC-70 equivalent, with Moldin' Oldies offline at the moment. Semroc has a balsa cone the same shape, or close enough, but I have no idea how much nose weight to use to be equal to the modeling clay packed with the original Vulcan. I have a page about this build: http://rocketry.newcenturycomputers...lackvulcan.html Yes, I posted most of this in the other thread, but I'm not looking for plans anymore, I'm building the darn thing! ... and I can hardly wait to fly it already ...

I built it last night. Well, mostly:
I'm pretty happy with it. I do wonder, now, how I ever got it together when I was a kid 25 years ago building the original.

I was expecting a brotha with the ears...
I know, different time, different space! JK! Looks good!

I've built a second, using the Fliskits "Midnight Express" paper rocket pattern to supply the body tube, nose cone, and thrust ring; that model's airframe is entirely made of 110# paper. For both rockets, I used BB's for nose weight, with epoxy in the plastic nose cone of the first one and yellow glue in the second. Since the yellow glue shrinks, I did it a layer at a time, about 4-6 BB's and some glue; the last layer is toilet paper soaked in yellow glue. I glued a safety pin into each, head toward the point, to serve as a lug.
I also reinforced the "points" on the fins with CA... they are pretty tough now. I'm looking forward to launching both as soon as the weather straightens out.

Well, Sunday I launched my Black Vulcan for the first time, on a C6-3 engine. It was not the flight I was hoping for, though, with the butt of the rocket swirling in a helical pattern all the way to engine burnout. I have read about Vulcans "tailwagging" on the way up, but I don't remember that my original Centuri Vulcan did that.
Looking at the rocket, I notice that the angle of the body during the tailwagging incident is about the same as the angle of the launch lug on the body. So I have retrofitted my rocket with a launch lug near the nose cone, embedded in the body, and a hole in the aft bulkhead that aligns with that lug. This way, the rocket can track straight up the rod rather than proceeding at an angle. Hopefully this helps.

Okay... that looks... SWEET! Really! I was going to do one up in color but now I think I'll go Gray-scale. Nice work.
I modded my X-24's with the same launch lug arrangement. Much better take-offs.

I've flown my Black Vulcan twice more since the mods; you can find links to the launch reports on my fleet page here:
