Thanks and cheers,
You're welcome! If I build a 1:1 Fireflash clone, I might go "half 'n half," using Semroc's balsa version of the PNC-51 for the rear tank nose cones and using Sirius Rocketry's resin PNC-51 nose cones for the forward tank nose cones, since the heavier resin PNC-51s would make ballast unnecessary.

Thumbs up Jay's Centuri Fireflash build thread

Bill E. ("Wallyum") will be happy to hear that the build portion of this thread now begins.

Picture #1: Most of the parts, including nose cones, tubes, birch dowels, centering rings, and launch lugs, etc., (yes, the fin stock is obviously missing).

#2: Main body tube is marked for 8 fins, pod tubes for 4 "fins." Ejection duct holes are cut centered on two opposing fin lines for "aft" fins.

Main tube shown with centering rings, pod tubes with ejection duct tubes installed.

#3: Closeup cross section of duct tube assembly.

#4: First pod attached with "extra" (unglued) centering rings to insure correct alignment.

#5: Side view to verify alignment there.

To quote the other, more illustrious builders here, "TBC" (To Be Continued)...

Thumbs up 1.00X Centuri Fireflash build continues

Photo gallery continues:

#6. Closeup showing method for aligning second pod with "extra" (unglued) centering rings. Glue is applied only to duct tube inserted into main body tube, and the side of the centering ring at the "forward" end of the main body tube.

More later.

He'd be happier to hear that this will be more than a display model.

You could always tell him that the 2.00X upscale WON'T be a Shelf Queen.

If it's not too much trouble.

Earlier this week, I started digging around in my rocketry supplies to see what I could find. I unearthed the nose cones for my ~1.91X ST-10 upscale.

Today I began emptying cardboard boxes and condensing their contents. I managed to rustle up my 1.00X Fireflash parts, and located some 1/16" balsa for the fins.

If the new Semroc ( http://www.erockets.biz/parts-from-semroc/ & http://www.erockets.biz/semroc-model-rocket-kits/ ) offers custom-made parts, maybe they could laser-cut fiber (or fibre, as Centuri spelled it--it's 0.050" thick Beveridge board) fins for your Fireflash. If you want or need to build a second 1:1 scale reproduction one, Sirius Rocketry still makes the resin PNC-51 duplicate nose cone (see: http://www.siriusrocketry.biz/ishop...pnc-51-172.html ).

blackshire.

Thanks for the enthusiasm, as always! I'm basically building the 1.00X version as a reference for an ST-10-based ~1.91X upscale. That ring in front of the main nosecone is causing me some potential painting dilemmas.

Cheers,

Cheers,
You're welcome. I know what you mean--you could spray paint the ring and the nose cone separately before gluing, but excess glue might squeeze out into the annular gap between them. Brush painting it--especially with enamel paint--might result in excess paint in the gap, and would leave visible brush strokes. BUT:

If acrylic paint doesn't leave visible brush strokes (as I've read in G. Harry Stine's "Handbook of Model Rocketry"), that might be the easiest option to use for painting that area, after gluing those parts in place. (If you need that area to match the color on a larger portion of the model [this may not be necessary; I can't quite picture the Fireflash's decor scheme in detail], the same paint could be applied elsewhere on the model with an airbrush, to avoid the chore of brush painting much or all of the rest of the rocket.)

The original body tubes were white, while the nose cones were medium blue. I've approximated them in the RockSim 3D picture below.

If you look closely at the (admittedly color-coded) 2D cross section, you should be able to see there's a small distance between the ogive cone and the foremost (i.e., "front") ring assembly. I'm considering either:

A) Moving the forward ring somewhat further forward, or...

B) Eliminating it completely, and possibly...

C) Substituting a small rectangular fin for the crosswise dowel and the forward ring between the two pods.*

*I'm sure RockSim would *love* that.
