If that's all you plan to do with the saw, see if you can rent a good one. I'd hate to spend $300-400 for a one weekend affair.

For knocking about the house trimming a limb here or there, a small cheaper saw is all you need, but you will want something a little better for your project.

Make sure to run good pure synthetic oil in the fuel.
Stihl's oil is awful.
Get Klotz Super Techniplate pre-mix oil and run it 50:1

Somehow, the thought of you with a chainsaw, scares the crap out of me

Wear chaps when using a chainsaw.

That is very good advice. Chain saws are very handy and useful, but like most power tools, they must be respected. They can mangle an arm or leg in short order if not used properly (or in an unsafe manner) and the results are often very nasty.

This was my philosophy when I bought mine. Our home is over 30 years old, and we have some large trees, but I figured a smaller saw would be fine for trimming. I didn’t think I’d be taking down any trees. I was going to buy a smaller Stihl or Husqvarna, but ended up with a 16” Craftsman for $99 (on sale from $169)— bought when Ace Hardware started carrying the Craftsman line. I was not expecting a lot, but figured for $99 I’d give it a try. It starts easily, has plenty of power for my needs. I did take down a 12” diameter hawthorn tree, which is pretty tough wood. It handled the job just fine.

I like the size since most of my use is cutting up tree trimmings for firewood. I’ve had it now for 3 years. Always has started easily with a pull or two.

Stihl is the best IMHO. ALL of my 2-cycle implements are Stihl and they’ve never let me down.

AGREED 100%. I wish there was an American made saw as good, but Poulan bit the dust 15 years ago or more. I had a 20" Poulan I bought in 1995 that ran and ran, but could not stand up to serious abuse by a 17 yr old (he did not fill the bar oil reservoir and ran it with straight gas at th same time.....

Wait? What? Aren't Stihl implements still made in Virginia Beach, VA?
