I'm working on an Estes Boosted Bertha and I would like to know what kind of orange paint was used on the face card model. It's relatively important because (1) of the decals is orange and is to be laid over the white fin, so I want to try to make the orange paint match the orange of the single orange decal.

My educated guess is Testors Competition Orange #1628 but I'd like to know for sure if possible.

Chris Michielssen built a show model for Estes, it may be the catalog and facecard model, he doesn’t say the paint brand (and rarely does). His email is in a recent blog post at his Blog

I'm almost sure it was the Rusto 2X Gloss Real Orange, #249095
That orange fin tip decal did end up a lighter shade of orange
when set on the white fin.

Maybe replace that decal with some stripes cut out of orange Monokote trim?

Thanks! I indeed have Rusto Real Orange. I’ve just had a brainstorm: Rather than trying to match the orange paint to the decal, I may paint the entire model orange, then when I paint the white fins leave THAT detail masked off on the white fin—and not have to use the orange decals at all.

That's brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?

Mine is Rusto 2x Real Orange. This was taken a couple of days ago as I was out flight testing some Flight Sketch Mini altimeters. The sun was kind of low in the sky and for some reason that makes the booster look a little different shade than the sustainer, but it’s not. It did , at this junction, have about a dozen flights’ worth of residue from staging on it, though.

As Chris noted, the orange decal that goes on the fin tip is a little translucent, so it looks a bit faded. Your scheme of making orange the base color and masking Sounds good. I think I actually did use orange as the base on this one since there is only one white fin on each stage. But I didn’t think to mask off the fin tip stripes. Maybe on the next one....

Okay....not a color question but a build question.....

It appears that if I follow the instructions, the motor extends from the motor tube .5 inches (motor block at 2.25", motor 2.75".

The motor retainer glues onto the exposed portion of motor tube. The lip of the retainer hangs off the end of the motor tube about an 1/8 inch. So, the end of the motor is now about 3/8" beyond the end of the retainer. The threaded part of the retainer cap is 3/8 inch long. So, with the motor installed, the cap sits on the end of the motor and can't screw onto the retainer.

Since it appears at least some of you have bult it, what the heck am I doing wrong?

I think the instructions mean to say that the glue is applied 2.25 in. from the end of the booster motor tube. Then the thrust ring and spacer tube are inserted so that .25 in. of the spacer tube is extending out the back end of the booster tube. So the thrust ring's final position is 2.5 in. from the end of the tube. Make sense?
Or to put it another way apply the glue 1/4 inch short of where the thrust ring will finally end up. When you insert the ring and motor spacer tube the ring will contact the glue just before reaching it's final position. Refer to the lower right portion of the "Assemble booster engine mount" panel for a good schematic with all the dimensions.
