Default Started Building a Semroc Nike-Tomahawk.

Just got started on building a Semroc Nike-Tomahawk I have had sitting open with nothing done for YEARS.
Decided it was time to try out some of my new NOS Xacto tools in my #89 and #84 sets.
MANY tiny parts/ribs for the built up booster fins.
This thing may SAY skill level 3, but I have built a K-41 Mercury Redstone with all the little tower dowels that was a legitimate Skill Level 5 and this thing is every bit as tedious.
Found an actual legitimate model-building use for the X-acto X-Calibre, #9RX, and #4 knife handles. Punching out all the little pieces to those internal fin-ribs.
Spent over an hour just getting the parts out of the "laser cut" sheet.
Probably could have done it with a #1 handle and #11 blade, but it was easier with the smaller blade handles.

Out of all the 1/10 semi-scale kits that Carl was releasing I think the Semroc Nike-Tomahawk was my favorite. It’ a decent sized rocket in that scale. I had downloaded the instructions a while back and the built up fins looks to be a challenge but the finished model with correctly shaped fins would look really nice. I’m sorry I didn’t get one when they were available

I bought it right after they came out.
Not sure I would have if I had known the fins were "built up".

I have no memory of this kit. Must have slipped in during one of my down moments. Post some pics of the build. I'd like to see what it looked like. Wonder if the fins are still in the eRockets files?

Bill-
Will take some pics.
I like pretty much all kits using a Nike Booster starting with the first Estes Nike-Ajax I built back in around 1979.
I'm pretty busy with work even during this COVID outbreak and only get an opportunity to build once every 2 weeks or so. Might be a long time coming with the pics, especially since this is summer, but will do what I can.
I basically started this build due to wanting to try out all my new NOS Xacto tools.

There’s one on eBay packaged with a IQSY Tomahawk here

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Two-Semroc...AAOSwvdZe5YW r

The instructions for the Nike-Tomahawk show some of the built up fin details.

Carl’s N-T has always been a nice looking model to me, though I don’t have one. Those built-up fins would take a bit of care, but as I suspect jeffyjeep could tell us, would result in some nice looking, properly shaped fins.

These kits do pop up on eBay from time to time, so if you don’t want to take up this double kit offering, single ones will invariably come around before too long.

I saw that kit on eBay the other night. I have the RockSim file from the old Semroc site for the Nike-Tomahawk and I copied the fins from that file and pasted them into a Nike-Ram file to see if that fin design could be used on a Nike-Ram just to consider a Nike-Ram with these built up fins but it was a little too far off and I don’t think it would look good. I did see that Semroc does currently offer these fins.

I was just messing with some ideas. Let us know when you get into the built up fins as to what you think of the design.

Didn't realize the upper stage fins were basswood, but they sure were a bear to round the edges.
I thought they were really hard balsa.
I NEVER ever leave fin leading/trailing edges square unless required for scale.
It is a very small step that reduces drag a TON. Filling tube spirals takes TEN TIMES the work and is almost zero benefit.
