How did the Hangar 11 kits compare? I have a 4" one that has been at 90% complete for years but I've been stalled at cutting and installing the PVC body shrouds.

The main BT is metric. It’s between BT55 and BT60. I’m on a job in Sumter, SC this week so I’m not able to measure the actual size.

The main body tube on the Quest X-15 is MRI/MPC/AVI/Quest T-35 (35 mm o.d., 34 mm i.d.). I don' t know the length of the tube.

I had the plastic X-15 as a kid (45 years ago). Turned after launch and ended up in a tree for 30 years.

I had done a Beta build for the Quest model years back. Built it 100% to instructions. That build DEFINITELY needs to be built light. Stability was not good.
I had the small Estes model (part of a starter kit) I got at the Cape gift shop back in 75 (just watched Deke Slayton go up on ASTP, it effected me.). My first rocket in fact. Flew ok. Stable just not high. A3-4T if memory serves. The wings were moved back more on that one as I recall. I'd love to lay my hands on another. I see one pop up on E-Bay mow and again. Just not willing to pay those prices. Last edited by stantonjtroy : 10-21-2020 at 10:58 AM. |

Here's some copy from my Quest X-15 build from 2014:
"Some had unstable flights with the original model. Later, Quest lengthened the 35mm body tube from 11" to 13". A clay weight was also added to the kit. The X-15 has gone over some recommended engine changes. Toward the end of the kit run, the A6-4 was the only recommended engine. On this build I'll play it safe and use the 13" longer 35mm tube and add .25 oz. of clay in the nose cone. I may not get stellar altitudes, but it should be stable! The model was built using the Quest X-15 parts pack. Here's the blog build from finish to start: http://modelrocketbuilding.blogspot.../label/Q%20X-15

The Estes RTF X-15 was recalled before the scouting accident because leaks around the motor tube caused it not to eject the parachute reliably.

I modified the Estes X-15 with a motor tube, Kevlar leader, and a thin-mill cloth parachute. Flew safely with a C6-3, although it weathercocked into a stiff breeze. Haven't flown it again due to the recall as I feel it would not be allowed at a club launch.

Agree with olDave's statement above about spelling and grammar errors.
Those mistakes can make something look like it was written by Cletus the illiterate slack-jawed yokel/hayseed/yay-hoo. Little things that go a LONG way.

Just got a notification from Apogee:
Quote:
Kit page here (no price yet): https://www.apogeerockets.com/Model...ocket-Kits/X-15 Pleasantly surprised to see this has a 29mm mount - should fly spectacularly on something like a G25W... |
