Default 3D Printed Parts

This clone (and subsequent Fleet clones) will have several 3D printed parts. The nose cone and canopy are ready. The canopy still needs some work which I am in the process of as we speak.

Fuel Drop Pods -
The pod pictures recently provided to me have helped with getting these pods to look very close to the original, although slightly different since I never liked the original shape. Have experimented with making the parts and making them as thin as possible without compromising integrity. The parts are designed to fit and line up when put together. I am very happy with the results. The hole on the "BT" serves two purposes: 1) to introduce a toothpick to help handle it while painting the pod, and 2) to mark the center of the BT and align with the middle of the tail fins so that once painted I know where to glue it to the pod support and keeping the "fins" as horizontal as possible (using the eye alignment method.) I plan to also design a second set of pod NC and Tail so that they would fit on an Estes BT-5.

Since the model is all white I was thinking of painting the fuel pods a very light gray to break with the one color monotony... but I am having problems getting the light gray here in Colombia. Most of the spray can colors I can find are only basic colors and the gray is too dark as you can see in the picture. Hobby shops here barely cater to hobbyist when it comes to paint and supplies. Plenty of models to build but hard to find the right colors. Airbrush is an option. In the meantime I have been experimenting with what I have when it comes to paint.

Missiles -
The original set of missiles were simple: a small NC and a basic fin tail... on other kits issued after the Fighter Fleet the missiles resembled the Sidewinder. I have ventured in getting some 3D models online then adapting them for the F-16. After experimenting I have decided to print a NC and tail sections and use a launch lug for the body instead of printing the entire missile... less sanding and finishing. It is also hard to get details at that size with my 3D printer. I have been able to create the NC and Fin tails with a good fit for launch lugs. I know the missile pictures do not look good but I know they will look great once finished and added to the F-16 clone...

An idea running through my mind is to add a second set of missiles under the wing. Wing tip missiles would look like the Sidewinder and the 2nd set would be a different missile. This idea is still under consideration.

Default Update JAN 2021 - Cloning the F-16

Work has been slow due to reworking the missile and new canopy STL files.

After looking at several real world F-16 pictures I decided to add missile pylons to the wing tips and extra pylons on the bottom of the wings. I took a note from building Sirius' Interrogator by lightly drawing on the paper sticker where I wanted the pylons. Then cut and removed the silhouette to expose the balsa underneath. This gave a chance for the wood glue to create a better "wood-to-wood" bond instead of with the sticker paper.

So now it will carry four missiles and two fuel drop pods. Applied an epoxy fillet to all root edges and a coat of white primer to see where there is a need to sand and prep it for its final white color. Still want to do the drop tanks on a light gray color but it seems that I cannot find the paint locally nor can I find a good acrylic thinner. If I could I would mix it and airbrush it myself.

The missiles will require a little filler and sanding "TLC" before final paint. The "Sidewinders" I also want them light gray. Will see what I can do with what I have...

RR,

After building several of these fighters. they are prone to damage to the wing tip missiles.

Consider this, don't fly it in a wind more than 5 MPH. Also, tie a string to the tail and the N/C so it lands horizontal to the ground.
Much like the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsule, this limits the amount of damage to the wing tip missiles.
Also, consider making the launch rails with a hardwood for strength.

While he has started with the F-16, his plan is to reproduce all five of the Fighter Fleet kits.

I would have liked the Fighter Fleet a LOT better if they didn't use cardboard fins and were a LOT closer to scale.
As they were, only the F-104 was even close to looking right.

Yes Sir, I looked at their rendition of the F-16 and it looks great. But like Earl said, I do intend on recreating/cloning the fleet with only minor adjustments and a few "doodads." The hardest part to recreate is the canopy/cockpit part. Recreating the parts with my 3D printer and redrawing the decals have been lots of fun, specially during my COVID down time.

Odd'l Rockets is working on a new "jet" rocket and I am waiting for when it is available to add it to my fleet.

DL:

Thanks for the advice. I remember flying my original F-16 and yes, the missiles were damaged a few times, even the fuel pods broke off. But for now this F-16 and the rest of the fleet will become "shelf queens." I cannot get motors to Colombia, plus there is nowhere close I could fly them if I could. I like to think that if it gets damaged then it will be repaired (we have the technology), and if it gets lost then that would be an excuse to build another one.
