Centuri Tomahawk Cruise Missile-Never Produced-Why?
In the Centuri 1981 catalog which came out in early Spring of 1981, a Magnum-D version of the General Dynamics cruise missile was advertised. Was gonna be a BT-70 bird, which would have made a pretty nice kit, all-in-all. I think this was a Bill Stine baby, if my memory serves.
However, the kit never made it to market and I have never heard or understood why. Does anyone know any further details behind this kit and why it was never released? I do know in later years Quest released a kit of this vehicle, but it was much smaller, maybe around 1.3" in diameter or so. If you have any info on the proposed Centuri offering, please fill us in! Earl

I didn't realize it never came out. Now I want to clone it.

Wonder if they chose to do the Bulldog rather than the Tomahawk? It’s in the 1982-83 catalogs and would’ve, kinda, sorta filled the same niche and probably would’ve had similar performance characteristics on smaller motors. |

I thought I had an Estes kit at home. Is it actually a Quest kit?

Quest made one that's about a BT-60 size (don't recall Quest diameters). It's a pretty large and displays well. I don't think Estes ever did one.

Yeah, that Spacemaster was some more imposing bird, right?
I wonder if there was some issue with the molded nose and tail cones that the catalog says the Tomahawk was to come with. Those would have been new plastic items and not small parts at all, as far as nose and tail cones go. But I am hoping someone here heard many years ago the reasons for this one never showing up on the market. Would have been a nice looking kit, I'm thinking. Earl

The Quest kit looks good on display with the bright red/white/blue coloring and decent size. I'm sure a BT-70 sized version would look better, especially if it had a molded tail section to eliminate errors that sometimes creep up in paper shroud transitions.

I built my Quest Tomahawk this past summer and it proved that I can not line up large decals properly.
I wonder how many other Centuri kits were never released? I tried to tag the Estes ones in the Estes kit list. There were those that were listed in a catalog (#2145 Star Booster, 2152 Zenix, etc.) and those that were either posted on a newsgroup or on an online flier (2135 Pigasus, 2229 Saturn 1B (1/70), etc.) |

That’s a good question Don, but to my knowledge I believe this to be the only kit Centuri listed in a catalog but then never actually released. I would however be VERY interested to hear if there are others, but having collected just about every Centuri kit (and having seen photos of the few I have not been able to snag as of yet), I do believe the Tomahawk is the only one.
