Saturn V launch memories
Does this photo of a family watching a Saturn V launch bring back any memories? I still remember being glued to the TV, soaking up every exciting detail. That's how the model rocketry seed was planted for me decades ago.
How about you? Kind regards, Jeff Jenkins aka: Faithwalker NAR #46879 SR |

Yeah, except No one was dressed that well, Dad was off working, and Mom was busy in the kitchen. All three brothers were playing outside and I was the only one watching......
Afterwards, I went outside with my Alpha and a couple of engines and launched.... |

I remember seeing most of my Saturn V launches at school in our classroom because most seemed to happen during school hours. And, as a young kid, it seemed like it took HOURS before a given launch finally occurred. “Oh gosh, we gotta listen to these guys TALK forever” was how I tended feel about the news commentators as they discussed the launch. I kinda still feel that way about news commentators (ahem, ‘movie star wannabes’) even today. And yes, even Cronkite was an ‘attention hound’.
That photo appears to have been composited by someone. The TV and dress style of the family are definitely latter 1950s for sure. Of course we all here know that the first Saturn V flew in November 1967. So, a tie-dyed t-shirt, a peace sign or two, or maybe some bell bottom pants might be a bit closer to the styles we’d expect to see in 1967-1972. Earl

I'm pretty sure that pic has been used in various ads and memes with different stuff shopped into the screen.

I remember getting up at 4AM on the east coast and listening to WCBS AM 880 out of New York for pre launch coverage. Televised coverage started at 6:45 AM and the Saturn looked magnificent sitting on the pad and venting liquid oxygen. At liftoff, 501 looked to be engulfed in flames but then began it's stately rise and cleared the tower. I really was anxious at S-II ignition and all through the burn of that stage. I could only think: " Man gambling with God". Magnificent!

I remember coming off a convoy security truck cleaning my M60 machine gun in Vietnam and listening to the radio when we made our first landing on the moon.

While the photo obviously was staged, and the clothing did not match some of the far out clothing of the late 60's and early 70's, the clothing in the photo does not appear to be too far off from some of the images that Centuri was displaying in their 1969, 1970 and 1971 Model Rocketry catalogs at the time. I remember sitting and watching in the living room in our Blossom Lane house. Seems to me the lights were out.
