I cloned one a few years ago and used the TT tubes. I also used an Estes Gauchito for the BT-58 and got a Saturn V plastic parts set from Estes for the capsule. There was an extensive thread on it over at TRF, but I believe it's gone now since the big crash. I had a list of all the parts and dimensions, but that was also on my old computer. I'll have to see if I can dig it up. Paul Graf made really nice resin copies of the lower fuel tank shroud and fins and beautiful vacuum formed copies of the BT wraps. The resin fins were really heavy though; mine doesn't get much altitude on an Estes D motor. I had to add a lot of nose weight. If I had to do it again I would make the fins from sheet styrene over a framework.

HO train scale is 1/87th. No, I don't know why it's such an odd one, but it is.
O scale is 1/48th - close to the suggested 1/50th. |

HO originally meant "Half-O", and the tracks were 'supposed to be' half as wide as O-gauge tracks. I'm becoming partial to Proto-87, myself... We now return you to our regularly-scheduled wierdness, already in progress...

Yes, indeed! Totally Tubular DOES have the correct tube! The tube is a TT-.70 tube 0.70" in O.D. The tanks on the real Saturn 1B are 70" in diameter so 1/100th is exactly 0.70". The tube is specifically made for the 1/100th scale Saturn 1B. I just got some about two weeks ago.

<digression>After I posted I saw the wikipedia article on H0 or HO scale. It's 3.5mm to the foot (still a weird scale) and yes there was discussion there about "half 0" scale. I've looked at a couple other explanations as well.
Clearly there were some "close enough" decisions in the history of these scales since exactly half of 0 scale would be 1/96th or 1/8th inch to the foot. Apparently 0 scale was being rendered at 7mm to one foot at the time, even though 1/4 inch is 6.35 mm. </digression> To wander vaguely back toward the topic.... for my own flying sites and such an N or Z scale Saturn 1B or V would probably be more practical. A Z scale Saturn V would be a little bigger than the Dr. Zooch rendering (which I need to get going on). |

Thanks Sandman! How long did it take you to get the tubes? If I understand correctly, I just email Jim (that email address still good?) then make payment arrangements? edit: ps, what is the difference between T-.700” and T-30? |

Barry Tunick of Estes Industries said ESTES was going to rerelease there Saturn 1B later on this year. I think he said some time in the fall.
I know everyone will believe it when you all see it. |
