Same here. I don't have a problem with Aerogloss gumming up when using the correct sandpaper and sanding the AG after it's completely dry (which doesn't take very long). It's always completely dry and hard by the time I've been revived.

Thanks for the pointers. I have been using 3m 400 wet or dry for each coat and it not only loads the sandpaper, it gets so nasty like paint was splattered on it that I can not wash off. I think I have some of that K&S stuff in my sandpaper stash. Or perhaps it is not quite dry.
Any way I went to my local BORG and they did not have DEFT products, only Minwax sanding sealer, and only in a fairly large can for $15 ... more that I want to spend on something that is unproven. |

Sands incredibly easily, no gumming of sandpaper. I never remember any issues with AeroGloss, and my most recent sanding sealer was SIG. No problems with it, either. However, I had to constantly thin the SIG with acetone, and the Deft brushes on beautifully. But you would expect this from a product meant to be brushed onto wood! I think Home Depot may have had pints, but a quart is cheap enough if not. I noticed that Deft also sells this in aerosol cans, but I did not notice if Home Depot carried it. The brushing is so easy, that I'd not likely even consider spraying on a sealer.

If one uses Acetone as thinner for Butyrate Dopes (Including Sanding Sealer) one would have to thin it all the time as that stuff evaporates so quickly; about the only common-place organic solvent that evaporates more quickly is Diethyl Ether. Acetone is a VERY specialized thinner for dopes that really should not be used straight unless using in very cold temps.
Better to use a mixture of Toluene, MEK, and MIBK. If I was going to use just one organic solvent for my "go to" dope thinner it would be MIBK; second place would be Toluene, but only because I hate the smell of MEK. A GOOD replacement thinning mixture for Aero Gloss/Sig thinner is below: 40% Toluene 30% MIBK 15% MEK 15% Acetone The Acetone can be skipped and the percentage of MIBK or MEK can be increased.

I`ve always used lacquer for thinning SIG sanding sealer ,usually 50/50 for the first coat (so it absorbs into the grain & pores ,then a thicker mix for the remaining coats. As mentioned, it doea dry very fast ,but works well for me.I wash my brush in lacquer as well.

The older, mom-n-pop hardware stores are the place to look for stuff like Deft. You might pay a bit more, but the variety will often be very good. We have a place near my office called Turner's Hardware that has a very good assortment of stuff like this. Doug .

I'll take your word for it regarding a good replacement, but for the cost of buying all those thinners, you might as well toss the dope sealers and just go with Deft! If it ever needed thinning, it is a lacquer, and so common, easy to find lacquer thinner can be used. I'm already sold on it (admittedly, I have limited experience with it, with only one use on a nose cone). What little SIG sealer I have will likely get used, but I don't plan on buying it again, mainly due to cost, although I was much more impressed with the way the Deft goes on.
