Thanks for the input Jerry. Yeah, if I had been thinking, I would have seen if Carl could cut me some. I guess a band saw would be a useful thing to keep around the shop......

But, I think these will do just fine. I think folks used to over-do the "high power" stuff in the day. I've launch my Super Big Bertha, with balsa fins (no lamination) and white glue on G motors. The most I'm going to get out of the 4X18 is E impulse on BP and F using 18mm composite. And the fins aren't nearly as draggy as the Super Big Bertha fins.

I see you wrote the ACE information reports included with the kit.

Agree with overkill building being the norm. It is only worse now. We thought we were building for any motors we could imagine, which included 18mm F, 24mm H, 29mm J, 38mm K, etc. Nowadays the rockets are boat anchors by comparison with spiral phenolic, blue tube, fiberglass and in some cases very thick CF. What? On 24mm and 29mm minimum diameter birds?

By comparison when I made a CF bird for a 60" 54mm motor, the wall thickness was about 1/32".

Don-

This thread is great! Thanks for posting it. Hell, maybe I'll have to build a clone now myself...

looking forward to seeing this one done.

here is a pic of my own Mini Allegro 'clone' ( this uses the purple tube from my original Ace kit, sadly the nosecone is likely still up in a huge tree , the motor tubes and fins were beyond saving so this is a semi-clone / repair, using vintage FSI RT7 ,iirc. )

Nypower 2010

made me fly from the high power pads as it's a 'complex cluster' :P

Bad rule writing as usual. And mindless adherence to it!

Actually, that's not all bad. I have several clustered BP rockets I prefer to fly from the G-H-I pads. They have 6' long ¼" rods and relayers. The relayer is needed for the clustered ignitors, and the long rod is handy when one of the motors doesn't light giving the rocket a bit more time to get up to speed.

Not all clusters are complex clusters. Hence the term complex. Let me guess, that's not defined either . . . .

It seems I didn't have to wait for NARAM after all. The weather has been pretty cooperative over the past several weekends so I was able to finish this out. Now, looking forward to some decent flying weather........
